McLeish ‘wowed’ by what he’s just seen from Lawrence at Rangers

Lawrence, 28, scored his second goal for Rangers as his new side drew 2-2 with PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday (16 August).

His long-range free-kick was fumbled into the back of the net by PSV stopper Walter Benitez to give the Gers the lead for the first time on the night.

Rangers could not hold on for the win but McLeish hopes Lawrence will take confidence from his own performance.

“When Tom stood over the ball I was thinking that, wow, that is quite some distance,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“How is he going to get this one over the wall? You see the way he hit the ball, the technique. I’m sure it was something he has practised because he looked so sure he would get it through the wall and on target.

“He did that but the goalkeeper made a howler, let’s be honest. Lawrence gave it some whip and I don’t know how it got through the wall.

“The PSV wall wasn’t very good but that is the quality Tom gives you, he will take such confidence from that.

“Hopefully it is the first of a few goals in Europe for him.”

Rangers face PSV in the second leg of their clash on Tuesday (24 August).

Before that, they face Hibs at Easter Road on Saturday (20 August).
