‘Let the fans see him’: Campbell tells Arteta to promote £3m summer signing

There’s a bit of a mystery regarding Marquinhos at Arsenal.
The 19-year-old was the Gunners’ first pre-season signing this summer after a £3 million deal was agreed with Sao Paulo.

However, Mikel Arteta is yet to include the young winger in any of the North Londoners’ three competitive outings this season.

But Marquinhos continues to enhance his reputation, netting three goals in two appearances for the Under-21 outfit thus far.

And with Arsenal reportedly interested in signing a winger this summer, Kevin Campbell has told The Highbury Squad on YouTube that the Spanish manager should perhaps give the Brazilian attacker an opportunity at a higher level instead.

Campbell said: “Marquinhos who’s done really well in the reserves and really shone. He’s played first-team football. He’s lively. Might as well have him on the bench. Let the fans see him. Let’s have a look because you know what, you might just get a surprise.”

Arteta’s judgement needs to be trusted. Just ask William Saliba.

The Arsenal manager, who praised the South American on Friday, made himself quite unpopular with some sections of the Emriates Stadium supporters for loaning Saliba to Marseille last summer.

Remember, the Gunners had been waiting since 2019 to see Saliba play a competitive outing for the club, following a £27 million transfer from Saint-Etienne.

So to loan him out for the 2021-22 campaign displeased some supporters, but on Saturday the 21-year-old scored a left-footed beauty in the 3-0 victory at Bournemouth.

He has been a real star in Arsenal’s early-season form, but Arteta obviously felt that he wasn’t ready last term and if he feels the same about Marquinhos then, well, it has to be respected.
