Brighton signed the 21-year-old midfielder for just £9million, with the Scot not part of Thomas Tuchel’s first-team plans at Stamford Bridge. Gilmour has now taken to Twitter to post an emotional farewell message.
Gilmour wrote: “Thank you for everything @ChelseaFC. I’ve developed so much here and met people who will be friends for life.
“I’ve grown from a young boy to a man but I feel now is the time to make the next step in my career. Good luck and all the best! Once a blue, always a blue!”
Gilmour will now go into a Brighton team that play very attractive and modern football under Potter. With the way the Scotland midfielder plays, it seems an ideal fit. Nevertheless, it was a tough decision for Gilmour to leave Chelsea on a permanent basis.
When asked if he needed a fresh start, he replied: “Yeah, I think so. Of course, it was a tough decision but I wanted to play football, that’s the main aim for me, to come in and enjoy my football and get regular game-time. It was a bit of a no-brainer.”
