BREAKING: Chelsea told to complete midfielder signing as £65m deal agreed

Noel Whelan has insisted Chelsea must look to revamp their midfield even if they tie Jorginho and N’Golo Kante down to new contracts.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed each of the Blues’ rivals have already added “youth and longevity” to their sides in recent windows.

According to The Times (2 September), contract negotiations for Jorginho and Kante are among the most pressing items on the agenda for Chelsea after a club-record £261million transfer spend in the summer window.

Both players have a year to run on their current deals and can discuss pre-contract terms with foreign clubs in just four months.

The Stamford Bridge club are yet to hit their stride in the new campaign, losing in their Champions League opener against Dinamo Zagreb and sitting sixth in the Premier League table.

Whelan suggested sporting director Todd Boehly will “be looking for new additions” despite opening contract talks with “the old guard”.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think they have to think about refreshing that midfield.

“Yes, Kante and Jorginho will get this extension – because there are no windows open and it’s something they have to do.

“But don’t tell me they won’t be looking for new additions. Every other team is doing just that. Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, Man City.
