‘Such a threat’: Eric Dier shares the one thing that has surprised him the most about Richarlison since he joined Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier spoke to the club’s official website after the Marseille game and shared the one thing that has surprised him about Richarlison.

Spurs got off to a winning start in the Champions League last night after a 2-0 victory over Marseille.

Antonio Conte’s men were underwhelming for large periods of the game as they struggled to get going.

But they started the second-half positively and the French outfit were reduced to 10 men in the 47th minute.

It was Richarlison who grabbed the headlines after scoring a quickfire brace in the final 15 minutes of the game.

Both goals were brilliant headers by the Brazilian and it’s his ability in the air that has surprised Dier.

Dier shares thing that has surprised him about Richarlison

Speaking to Spurs Play, Dier admitted that Richarlison’s ability in the air has taken him by surprise.

“I heard he [Richarlison] was crying. I think for all of us as kids Champions League is your dream to play in it, to play in these European nights is the best thing in club football and very special for all of us,” he said.

“All of us have worked extremely hard to be in the position to play in it and Richy is no exception. I’m sure it means a lot to him.

“He’s someone that plays with his heart on his sleeve every day in training, matches. Since he’s come in, I can’t speak highly enough of him.

“His character, the way he works every day in training and obviously his patience having not played too much at the beginning of the season.

“He’s then come in these last couple of games and the impact he’s had you can obviously see.

“Great headers [Richarlison’s goals]. He’s so strong in the air.

“I think that’s maybe a part of his game that’s surprised me a little bit since he arrived. He’s such a threat in the air and physically so strong. Fantastic headers.”

Richarlison has made a huge impact since making the switch from Everton this summer.

The Brazilian had impressed in his four substitute appearances and has now started in both of Tottenham’s most recent games.

The 25-year-old made his first-ever Champions League appearance last night and marked it with two well-taken goals.

Richarlison broke down in tears after the game after what was a huge moment for him on a personal level.

Conte will be hoping his new signing can continue his current form as Spurs travel to Manchester City this Saturday.
