NCD SPORTS: ‘I would love to’ – Chelsea owner Todd Boehly confirms plan to copy Man City model
Chelsea’s owner Todd Boehly has confirmed that he wishes to copy the City Football Group model at the London club.
Currently City are part of this model spearheaded by the team’s owner Sheikh Mansour. There are 12 clubs across the world who belong to the City Football Group including; New York City, Melbourne City, Girona, Troyes and the most recent acquisition Palermo.
The idea behind the City Football Group is to help ensure the best talents across the world are found and developed with Manchester City able to benefit by signing players from their feeder clubs or loaning out their academy talents to these teams. Opposition to this model have claimed that it creates a monopoly in football and gives some of the participating teams an unfair advantage.
Critics of the model do not seem to have deterred Boehly though who has set out his hopes to replicate the model at Chelsea. Speaking to PA, he explained: “We’re going to be continuously adding resources.
“We’ve talked about having a multi-club model. I would love to continue to build out the footprint.”
Boehly, who is part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, completed the purchase of Chelsea in May for £4.25bn. Previous owner Roman Abramovich was forced to sell the club after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine..TAP.TO.CONTINUE.READING
Last week, Boehly made headlines after he sacked Thomas Tuchel following defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League. Little more than 24 hours later, Chelsea appointed Brighton and Hove Albion boss Graham Potter as their new manager.
