Police in Balaka have arrested a 41-year-old driver, Steven Gerald, for causing death by reckless driving contrary to Section 126 of the Road Traffic Act.

The accident happened on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at Mpezeni Area along the Balaka–Khwisa Tarmac Road.
Gerald, from Dulani Village under Traditional Authority Nsamala, was driving a Mercedes Benz lorry, registration number BD 5201, when he collided head-on with a motorcyclist.
Balaka Police Public Relations Officer Gladson M’bumpha, said Gerald was overtaking a cyclist when he hit motorcyclist Salimu Ibrahim Mulla, 61, a businessman from Mponda Village in the same area.
“The deceased sustained multiple fractures and severe head injuries and died on the spot,” M’bumpha confirmed.

The motorcycle was extensively damaged, while the lorry had its front part damaged. Gerald escaped unhurt and will appear in court soon to answer the charge of causing death by reckless driving.
