A 25-year-old man, Isaac Daniel, has died by hanging after allegedly losing K41,000 he earned from timber trading.
According to Balaka police spokesperson Inspector Gladson M’bumpha, Daniel was involved in the business alongside several friends. On 6 September, his friends reported him to authorities for mismanaging funds from the venture.

Inspector M’bumpha said local leaders, including the chief of Mateyu, intervened, and the matter was resolved when Daniel promised to repay the lost money.
However, Daniel reportedly began showing signs of mental distress, including excessive alcohol consumption and throwing stones at neighboring houses. On the night of his death, he was said to have been drinking with friends at the home of Blessing Kapito. After the gathering ended, his friends left, leaving him alone. Later, the homeowner found Daniel hanging from a tree.
Medical results confirmed that Daniel died by asphyxiation.
Police have urged community members not to resort to self-harm when facing financial or personal difficulties, but instead to seek advice and support from trusted people.
