A female prison officer who struck up a romantic relationship with a violent inmate is facing jail after admitting misconduct in a public office.

Charlotte Winstanley, 27, admitted to having a relationship with 29-year-old inmate Jabhari Blair while working at HMP Lindholme in South Yorkshire. She also smuggled contraband into the prison, including a mobile phone and SD cards, during the three-month fling.
Sheffield Crown Court heard the offence carries a maximum sentence of 10 years. Winstanley, from Stainforth, South Yorkshire, also admitted sending a photograph from inside the Category C prison in April last year.
Blair, who is serving a 12-year sentence for his role in a violent street fight, joined the hearing via video link from Lowdham Grange prison near Nottingham. He admitted possessing cannabis, a phone, and a USB stick.

Judge Meghan Rhys told Blair that he would be sentenced on December 3 – the same day as his 30th birthday. Blair responded: “Thanks for the birthday present.”
Winstanley was granted bail until sentencing. Her barrister, Khadim Al-Hassan, said she had made no attempt to play down her actions.
“She’s made a full and frank disclosure,” he told the court.
Judge Rhys addressed both defendants, saying: “Jabhari Blair and Charlotte Winstanley, you’ve pleaded guilty to acceptable counts on the indictment. You will therefore need to be sentenced. Sentence will take place on December 3.
