The Movement for Justice accused the Sanwo-Olu administration of pursuing a broader agenda to clear waterfront communities, including Oworonshoki and Makoko, to pave way for large-scale elitist projects.
The Movement for Justice has accused Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, of unlawfully detaining 28 protesters, known as the “Makoko 28,” despite meeting all bail conditions set by the Mobile Court of the Lagos State Task Force.
In a statement released on Monday, the convener, Ayo Ademiluyi, alleged that the state government continues to hold the protesters in custody as punishment for their attempt to attend the recently convened Waterfront Summit, organised by the Lagos State government itself.
The group said the protesters were intercepted on their way to the summit and subsequently remanded in prison by state authorities.
The Movement for Justice accused the Sanwo-Olu administration of pursuing a broader agenda to clear waterfront communities, including Oworonshoki and Makoko, to pave way for large-scale elitist projects.
The group likened the plan to the transformation of Lekki and warned that thousands of poor residents face displacement.
Ademiluyi called for the immediate release of the detained protesters.
He added that failure to secure their freedom would lead to escalated demonstrations by all measures within the ambit of the law.
The statement read, “We are aghast to proclaim to the whole world that Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu of Lagos State is still holding the “Makoko 28” despite presenting the materials fulfilling all the bail conditions to the Registry of the Mobile Court of the Task Force .
“We now have strong information to the effect that the Lagos State Government is still holding onto the 28 innocent protesters for daring to even register for the Waterfront Summit which the same Government convened for the same purposes of dialoguing with the Waterfront people.
“It will be recalled that they were on their way to the Waterfront Summit organised by the Lagos State government when the same government TASK FORCE descended on them and banished them to prison.”
According to the group, “What does the Babajide Sanwo-OLU regime really want? It has cleared off thousands of homes of the poor from Oworonsoki Waterfront to the Makoko Waterfront of the Lagos Lagoon to turn it to the second “Lekki” of the Lagos Mainland.
“We want to assure the Sanwo-OLU regime that resistance will continue on the streets against this clear evil agenda.
“We call for the immediate release of the “Makoko 28” failing which we will escalate mass resistance on the streets against, by all measures within the armbit of the law.”
