Few days after some stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Katsina State endorsed late President Muhammadu Buhari’s son, Yusuf, for a House of Representatives seat, cracks have started to emerge among stakeholders in Daura...READ FULL; FROM THE SOURCE.
At a meeting held in Sandamu Local Government Area of Katsina last week, a group announced Yusuf Buhari as the preferred candidate of the APC in Daura/Sandamu/Mai’adua Federal Constituency.
While addressing participants, the council chairman, Usman Na Lado, described the endorsement as a collective resolution reached by the stakeholders, who aim to strengthen the party’s chances at the polls.
He noted that Yusuf Buhari’s candidacy was considered suitable based on his perceived capacity and acceptance among party stakeholders.
Lado also listed President Bola Tinubu, Governor Dikko Umar Radda as the party’s standard flag bearers for the presidency and governorship seats, respectively, in the 2027 general elections.
He further revealed that the stakeholders also backed the Speaker of the Katsina State House of Assembly, Nasiru Yahaya Daura, for the Daura Senatorial seat.
But rising from another meeting this weekend, prominent stakeholders of the APC from five local government areas in the Daura Emirate, vowed to resist the move to allegedly impose certain individuals as candidates for the area.
They claimed that a few individuals holding government positions were acting unilaterally, falsely attributing the move to the state governor, while insisting they would continue to uphold the party’s long-standing democratic process.
Two representatives each from Zango, Baure, Mai’adua, Sandamu, and Daura local government areas attended the meeting.
In his opening remarks as chairman of the meeting, Barrister Usman Ahmed El-Marzuk, a former national legal adviser of the APC in Daura, said some individuals were attempting to mislead the public by claiming that Governor Dikko Umaru Radda had approved the selection of candidates for the area.
He firmly denied this, stating that the move was not from the governor but rather the handiwork of certain officeholders within the party.
“There is nowhere the governor has said that any candidate should be imposed. These claims are false and are being spread to confuse the public and tarnish the leadership’s image,” he said, adding that the governor had consistently maintained that each area should decide its own candidate.
He further explained that the meeting was convened to protect the integrity of the APC, the legacy of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, and the reputation of Governor Radda.
He emphasized that, for the 2027 elections, the focus remains on securing a second term for both Governor Radda and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that no other candidate has yet been officially endorsed.
El-Marzuk accused a senior party official of spreading false narrative, urging the individual to retract the statement apologize or resign from office.
He warned that such actions could create division within the party and give opposition parties an advantage if not addressed promptly.
“The APC constitution provides for either consensus or open contest. Any attempt to bypass this process will not be accepted,” he stressed.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Daura Local Government, Hon. Bala Musa Daura, called on the public to disregard the reports about imposed candidates allegedly endorsed by the governor.
In a related development, the Special Adviser to the Katsina State Governor on Political Matters, Yau Umar Gwajo-Gwajo, also stated that the governor had issued no such directives to the Daura zone or any other zone.
