The Federal Government has issued a directive requiring all secondary school teachers in public and private institutions to obtain proper certification from the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).

Schools failing to meet this requirement will lose their status as examination centres, according to a memo issued on Thursday, September 11, 2025, by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa.

The directive, aimed at enhancing professionalism in the teaching sector, stipulates that starting March 2027 for WASSCE, May 2027 for NABTEB, June 2027 for NECO, and June 2027 for SAISSCE, only schools with TRCN-registered and licensed teachers will be accredited as examination centres.

Alausa emphasized that schools must achieve at least 75% compliance by 2026 and 100% by 2027, with state governments tasked to enforce adherence.

To support non-education graduate teachers with at least 12 months of classroom experience, Alausa recommended enrolling in the National Teachers Institute (NTI) abridged professional certification programme.

This initiative offers three- to six-month courses, enabling participants to qualify for TRCN registration and licensing. The minister urged stakeholders to prioritize compliance and conduct widespread sensitization to prevent disruptions in examination centre accreditation.
