The Radical Agenda Movement in the Nigerian Bar Association (RAMINBA) has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, demanding that he orders the withdrawal of charges filed against 28 residents of Makoko or face mass protests across the state.
In a press statement signed on Thursday, September 11, 2025, by its chairperson, Ayo Ademiluyi, and secretary, Abiodun Kolawole, the NBA group described the charges as “trumped-up” and accused the state government of waging a coordinated crackdown on Lagos’ waterfront communities.
According to RAMINBA, the 28 residents – now dubbed the “Makoko 28” – were arrested by police officers attached to the Lagos State Task Force and arraigned before a mobile court located within the Task Force premises.
They were subsequently remanded at Kirikiri and Badagry Prisons pending the next adjourned date of October 3, 2025.
The group said the affected residents, under the coalition Freedom in Makoko, Oko-Agbon, Sogunro and Iwaya (FREMOSI), had been preparing to attend the inaugural Lagos State Waterfront Summit at Eko Hotel when they were arrested by officials of the same government convening the summit.
RAMINBA questioned the sincerity of Sanwo-Olu’s administration, accusing it of feigning dialogue while pursuing forced evictions.
“We beg to ask: how sincere is the Lagos State Government about dialoguing with waterfront communities in Lagos State?” the group stated.
The group alleged that the clampdown on Makoko was part of a wider agenda to displace waterfront dwellers, noting that similar evictions had already taken place in Oworonshoki, Ajegunle, and Oko-Baba plank market.
It added that officials had also served fresh eviction notices on Makoko residents just a day before the arrests.
RAMINBA vowed to mobilise “incessant protests” until the detainees are released if Governor Sanwo-Olu refuses, fails, or neglects to act within 24 hours.
A full list of the arrested residents was released, including names such as; Lokosu Simon, Ateji Simon Peter, Dosugan Perfect, Mehinto John, Anansukilo Hinnuho, Simenu Thursday, Kpodahude John, Vava Gabriel, Andrew Yansunnu, Oliver Sunnunvun, Abraham Atungbe, and several others.

The group stressed that the arrests expose the Lagos government’s real intentions towards waterfront communities, accusing the state of prioritising forced evictions over human rights and due process.
