Republic of Molossia: Meet The Smallest Country In The World With Only 33 Citizens, Has No School No Hospital

When it comes to geography, bigger doesn’t always mean better. Some of the world’s tiniest nations, though often overlooked, offer the most unusual and fascinating stories. One such place is the self-declared Republic of Molossia — widely known as one of the smallest republics on Earth.

Covering just 6.3 acres and home to a population of only 33 people, Molossia is a desert-based micronation tucked inside the United States. Its arid climate makes farming nearly impossible, and the landscape lacks many of the basic features associated with modern states — there are no paved roads, airports, schools, or hospitals within its tiny borders...READ FULL; FROM THE SOURCE.

The micronation was founded and is led by Kevin Baugh, who serves as its president. Born on July 30, 1962, Baugh established Molossia as a self-proclaimed sovereign state, though it is not officially recognized by the United Nations or any internationally acknowledged government. Despite this, the nation proudly maintains its own identity, complete with symbols of statehood.

Situated near Dayton, Nevada, Molossia spans about 1.28 acres of claimed land and has developed its own unique character. It operates with its own currency, the Valora, humorously nicknamed “Pillsbury cookie dough money.” The currency is divided into 100 futtrus and is said to be pegged to the value of a unit of Pillsbury cookie dough — adding a playful twist to its economic system. Interestingly, everyday transactions are often conducted using poker chips.

Molossia also boasts a surprising number of national institutions for its size, including a war office, a small navy, a bank, a railroad, and even a national anthem. English serves as the official language, while Esperanto holds recognition as a secondary language.

Described affectionately by his wife as a “caring tyrant,” President Baugh leads the nation with enthusiasm and theatrical flair. The micronation is tax-free and even humorously claims to provide “foreign aid” to neighboring Storey County.

Though tiny and unrecognized on the global stage, Molossia continues to capture imaginations around the world — proof that even the smallest territories can leave a surprisingly big impression.
