BREAKING: You NEED To Stop Doing These 19 “Normal” Things That Are Actually Way More Unhygienic Than You Realize

“Most people crave it enough that we don’t care about the sliminess, wet patches, or sticking things in our mouths that we know have been in less-than-clean places.”

I like to write about spooky stuff, including *EEK* politics, as well as various lifestyle and pop culture topics.

I don’t know about y’all, but I am a strict NO SHOES ON FURNITURE kind of person. 😤

We all have our little cleanliness rules to keep us hygienic; some of us just have wayyyyyy less than others. Many of us, however, are completely oblivious to what “hygiene rules” we’re actually breaking. Reddit user Wonderful-Economy762 asked the internet, “What is extremely unhygienic but everyone seems to do it anyway?” Let’s just say this will make you second-guess who you shake hands with…

1. “Cellphones! Some of you reading this are sitting on a toilet taking a shit at this very moment. Stop it. If you’re not cleaning your cellphones on the regular, then buy a box of alcohol wipes and start. Okay, I’ll get off my soap box now.”

2. “Letting your dog sleep in your bed. Apparently, this is very American. I guess many other countries don’t let pets in their bed.”

3. “I just know more people than we think don’t wipe properly. I just know it. Sometimes I see someone clean a dish or wipe a bench, and I think no way you’re wiping your butt all the way.”

“After switching to a bidet, I now know how much cleaner a butt can be vs. just toilet paper, so I feel this way with every person who doesn’t have a bidet.”

4. “Not closing the toilet lid when flushing.”

5. “Wearing shoes in the house. Do you know what you’ve been walking through all day? Paulie from The Sopranos had it right about hygiene and shoelaces.”
Paulie telling the other mobsters that he hates touching shoelaces and that "even if the lace is dry, and even if you don't touch the body of the shoe, bacteria and viruses migrate from the sole up"

6. “Sitting their purse or phone down on a public bathroom floor. I see it all the time, and it makes me crazy. 😵‍💫”

7. “Leaving wet towels on the bed or floor.”

8. “The number of times I’ve been in a public or office washroom and someone comes out of the stall, runs their hands through their hair or touches their face or mouth, and THEN washes their hands. 😳”

“Or doesn’t wash their hands at all…”

“The key is, after you wash your hands, use a paper towel to turn the handle to open the door. I can only imagine the number of people who touch that door who didn’t wash their hands.”

9. “Elevator buttons and door handles.”

“I work in a high-rise, and every time I touch the button, I think of the hundreds of other people that touched it that day. It’s definitely not clean.”

“I always use the tip of my car key to press elevator buttons.”

10. “Licking fingers to provide more ‘traction’ to turn pages.”

11. “Floss picks in public. They never seem to find a trash can. Plus, you’re sticking the gunk from between your teeth into your other teeth. Do that in the bathroom, wash your hands, and maybe use regular floss.”

12. “Sticking their fingers into bowling balls and then eating pizza and wings without washing their hands in between, and being okay with knowing lots of other people have done the same thing. Not to mention touching those rental shoes…”

“And then putting them back in the ball holes after eating said wings when you know all you did was wipe that shit off with a flimsy napkin.”

13. “After COVID, I’m completely freaked out that people still blow out candles on a cake and then hand out slobber cake to everyone.”

14. “Long, fake fingernails. Gross and extremely unhygienic. No way are they clean underneath. There’s a reason people who work in hospitals aren’t allowed to have long nails.”

15. “Not changing bras all week.”

16. “Not washing their water bottle/tumbler on a regular basis.”

“It blows my mind that people do this.”

“I have a huge metal thermos I use for coffee, it can get stained easily as I drink black, and if I forget it in my car, it can dry out. Pop an Efferdent tablet or two in there, fill with hot water, and leave sealed for an hour. Come back and dump it; nothing is left. A little rinse for the residual, and I’m back to business. If you wanted, you could submerge a lid in a Tupperware with it and get the same effect.”

17. “That big wave pool at the water park full of bodies scares me.”

18. “Sleeping on a hotel mattress with hotel sheets and a hotel pillow. We all do it, but… 🤢”

Last but not least:

19. “Sex.”

“Getting sweaty AND swapping body fluids with another person. Sometimes, even a stranger whose STI status we have no idea about. Obviously, it’s insanely fun when done right, and most people crave it enough that we don’t care about the sliminess, wet patches, or sticking things in our mouths that we know have been in less-than-clean places. But if you think about it…the last word you could use for sex would be hygienic.”

What do you think? Are these people a little too germaphobic, or are many of us just not germaphobic enough? Let us know in the comments.
